What ORCKA Canoeing and Kayaking Skills Courses Can I Take?

The following are some of the canoeing and kayaking skills courses currently being offered by ORCKA Organizational Members in the Province of Ontario. If you don't see a course listed here, please refer to the "Course Providers" page for an ORCKA Organization Member in your area to see how they can help you take a paddling course or a paddlesport adventure! The regions indicated correspond to the twelve Ontario Tourism Regions as designated by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism.

Basic Canoeing Level 1 9/11/2010 -

Basic Canoeing Level 1 and 2 (Tandem) is an introduction to canoeing. The candidate will demonstrate safe behaviour while becoming comfortable paddling in a tandem canoe. Suitable for inexperienced canoers. Children a minimum of eight years old can take the course at the Basic 1 level.

Prerequisites: There are no canoeing prerequisites for Basic Canoeing Level 1.

Basic Canoeing Level 2 9/11/2010 -

Basic Canoeing Level 2 and 3 (Tandem) builds on the skills introduced in Basic Canoeing Level 1 and 2 by refining the paddling techniques and performing the manoeuvres with more precision. Suitable those who have some paddling experience and want to develop their skills to a higher level.

Basic Canoeing Level 4 9/11/2010 -

Basic Canoeing Level 4 (Solo) introduces the canoeist to solo paddling. Suitable for those who have some canoeing experience with a love for canoeing. We recommend candidates be at least 10 years old for this course.

Basic Canoeing Levels 1-4

This two-day course is designed for the novice canoeist who would like to learn how to paddle their canoe safely and with confidence. It is also for the &lsquoself taught&rsquo or more experienced canoeist who would like to improve on their skills.  Both tandem and solo skills are covered.

Successful participants will receive certification for Basic Canoeing Level 4 by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association.

Canadian Style Paddling Level 2 9/11/2010 -

9:00-5:00 Cambridge/South Western Ontario

Lakewater/Canadian Style Canoeing level 1 & 2

This course is designed to perfect tandem skills and continue the development of solo paddling skills. Canadian Style paddling is a higher level of paddling than Basic, and involves more precise handling of the canoe, both tandem and solo. 

Successful participants will receive certification in Canadian Style level 2 by the Ontario Recreation Canoeing and Kayaking Association.

Prerequisites: ORCKA Basic level 4 or Flatwater Level D, equivalent certification or comparable skills and experience (with permission of instructor).

Basic Canoeing level 1 & 2

This one-day introductory course is for the canoeist with no or little previous experience in canoeing.  Participants will learn safe tandem canoeing while increasing their confidence. Successful participants will receive certification in Basic Caneoing level 2 by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association.

9:00-5:00 Cambridge/South Western Ontario Flatwater/Basic Canoeing level 4

This one-day course is designed for the canoeist who has mastered the tandem skills taught in Levels A to C and would like to learn how to paddle their canoe solo. It is also for the &lsquoself taught&rsquo or more experienced canoeist who would like to improve on their solo skills.

Successful participants will receive certification in Basic Canoeing level 4 by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association.

Prerequesites: Participants in this course must meet the requirements for Basic Canoeing level 3 or Flatwater level A-C (or equivalent) before being accepted into the course.
